“Community Dorf” Knowledge Fair at the 9th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 9) in Bonn, Germany from May 15-28, 2008

This is the poster that CERD represented by Ms. Mariter Quinonez shared in the “Community Dorf” Knowledge Fair at the 9th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 9) in Bonn, Germany on May 15-28, 2008.

As many as 6,000 delegates attended the said conference. Aside from party delegation of UN member states, there were also civil society delegation from Indigenous Peoples (IPs), Protected Areas, Sustainable Agriculture Coastal and Marine, Women and others. CERD as a 2006 finalist is part of the Equator Initiative network delegation led by UNDP.

The civil society attended the convention to participate in the discussion of important issues such as Agro industrial agrofuels production, Access and Benefits Sharing (ABS), rights of indigenous peoples and local communities, genetically engineering trees, ocean fertilization, and others.

It was also important to integrate in the agreements the possible impact on climate change of abovementioned issues as well as the protection of biodiversity and rights of IPs and local communities.

Meanwhile a community space was created for the sharing of experiences of community dorf (village) together with the 25 finalists of the Equator Initiative 2006. Concrete practices and experiences were discussed as well the important issues on the convention. A Declaration/ Statement was formulated and included in the high-level discussion at the Conference of Parties (COP).

The Community Knowledge Network was also formalized composed of the finalists of the Equator Initiative of 2002, 2004 and 2006. A Regional Network was also formed each for Asia Pacific, Latin America and African regions. The network is expected to be a venue for people to be more persistent in disseminating the traditional knowledge of IPs and local communities, for widening the scope and influence on biodiversity conservation, and to further develop biodiversity initiatives throughout the whole world.

At the last part of the Community Dorf, the 25 finalists (CERD included) to the 2006 Equator Initiative were given recognition.

The UN members particularly Germany greatly recognizes the awardee organizations, considered good examples and leaders of the potential victory of biodiversity conservation throughout the world.
